Foot fungus, also called athlete’s foot, is a contagious fungal infection that can lead to an itchy and burning rash on one or both of your feet. It’s common to experience it between your toes, but you may also get it on the tops of your feet, your heels, or your soles. Athlete’s foot is a type of ringworm. At Mountain View Foot & Ankle, we can help.
Lots of different types of fungi cause athlete’s foot. It occurs from coming into contact with a flake of skin from someone who has the condition or touching the foot of someone with it. It may also spread if you touch an infected surface.
Common spaces where you can get athlete’s foot are locker rooms, saunas, and swimming pools. You can also get it from sharing towels, shoes, or socks with someone who has it.
The most common symptoms are:
You may also experience a burning sensation in your feet. In some instances, you can have cracked skin.
To identify the fungus and offer the right athlete’s foot treatment, we perform a full examination. For many cases, we will prescribe antifungal creams or gels that you apply topically. When antifungal creams for foot fungus are not working, we provide oral medications to eradicate the fungus.
For more severe cases, we may also turn to laser treatments. These are non-invasive therapies that don’t cause harm to surrounding tissue, offering highly-targeted treatment.
To help manage the symptoms of athlete’s foot while the medication begins to take its course, keep your feet dry, cool, and clean. You also want to avoid scratching your feet, since that can lead the fungus to spread to other parts of your body.
